Filmmaker Michael Showalter, who wrote “Wet Hot American Summer” and directed the likes of “The Big Sick” and “The Idea of You,” says he’s working with Amazon MGM Studios on a remake of 2001 rom-com “Serendipity”… kind of.
Speaking with Deadline recently, he says the new film isn’t so much a remake, reboot or reimagining, rather a ‘rebuttal’ of the original and a modern retelling of it:
I am so honored and excited to get to live inside this iconic funny, romantic and intelligent world that [writer] Marc Klein has created. This new ‘Serendipity’ is not a remake or even a reboot, I’d say it’s more of a rebuttal. Same title. New characters. New story and new ideas about love and relationships.”
Peter Chelsom directed the original which starred John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale as strangers who fall for each other one Christmas night in New York, despite being engaged to other people and swap names on items they have on hand. Seven years later, each begins searching for the other.
The film grossed $77 million worldwide but was widely dismissed as syrupy nonsense and certainly not in the league or other rom-coms at the time such as “Notting Hill”.
In the 25 years since, a LOT has changed. Rom-coms have mostly died out on the big screen bar the occasional exception and modern romance itself has been drastically changed by numerous factors from dating apps and smart phone usage, to much more widespread awareness and acceptions of different relationship dynamics, sexuality issues (including grey sexuality), economic factors, mental health issues, and a generational downturn in sex that’s impacting birth rates worldwide.
