Robert Downey Jr. and “Avengers: Endgame” co-director Joe Russo recently sat down with CBR for an extensive reflection on “Avengers: Infinity War” and how they aim to make sure “Avengers: Doomsday” blows the doors off.
Reaction to the trailers so far online has been mixed, but there’s no denying the presales numbers that, four months out, are even eclipsing the recent “Spider-Man: Brand New Day”.
Downey tells the outlet he believes they’ve found the only real way forward for the series, and it comes with some experimentation:
“I try to feel like I’m in the writing room, but eventually there are so many big shoes to step into that I just have to go, ‘What hasn’t been done as well as it could be done yet?’ So, we’re always looking for that opportunity. And a lot of it has been some experimentation, and we’ve had our moments of, ‘Let’s shift here.’ But we landed in a place that I think will more than suffice.”
Downey adds that a lot of it comes down to not just his character but how the film has been constructed:
“It’s not even about how I executed it. It’s about the way it’s been structured and the other characters. There’s something going on in ‘Doomsday’ and forward that is literally the only antidote to, ‘How do you not have these films be a letdown after an “Infinity War” and “Endgame”?’ And boy, have we laboured long and hard to bring that.”
Russo acknowledges this and “Secret Wars” have been their hardest Marvel films to make to date, and the answer here was to adopt the ‘Brand New Day’ approach – not to trying and top the last film on scale but rather with greater emotional depth:
“These have obviously been harder than the other ones for that reason, right? As the stakes keep going up. But emotional complexity is always the answer.
You bring emotional complexity to anything, and it enriches it and makes it a fuller experience for the audience. It surprises you. There are a lot of surprises in this, and I think it’s the most emotionally complex of all of them. In a lot of ways, the most mature of all of them.
We’ve been very fortunate enough, as collaborators, Robert and I, to be able to do this over and over again. And knock on wood, we can do it two more times.=”
Downey Jr. also confirmed he heard Alan Silvestri’s Doctor Doom theme on approximately the fourth day of production and it immediately affected his performance – so he continued using the music to maintain Doom’s point of view.
“Avengers: Doomsday” opens in cinemas on December 18th. FIlmBase reports that “Avengers: Secret Wars” is currently on hiatus from production until the end of September.
A listing on the AMC website has also confirmed that “Avengers: Endgame Encore,” the upcoming re-release of 2019’s fourth “Avengers” film “Avengers: Endgame,” is going long when it opens September 25th.
The title will reportedly clock in at 185 minutes – four minutes longer than the theatrical cut. The re-release will reportedly play a crucial role in establishing its connection to ‘Doomsday’.
