Like Ridley Scott, legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki is almost certainly never going to retire and keep making films until he dies.
A new report at Bloomberg (via WoR) has gone into the inner workings at Studio Ghibli and reveals that 85-year-old Miyazaki is still very much in charge of creative decisions.
His son Goro is being eyed as a potential creative heir, while Kenichi Yoda has taken over as the studio’s new CEO. But Goro says bringing in outside filmmakers would be “absolutely impossible” as long as Hayao himself is around – he’s inseparable.
The studio is also insistent it won’t switch over to a more IP-driven content factory.
But the biggest reveal is that Hayao is working on his next project after the Oscar win for “The Boy and the Heron,” but no one else knows what it is.
Yoda says Hayao “comes to the studio every day” and no one has a clue as to what he’s doing: “Only he knows exactly what he’s working on.”
Previously, Goro teased it was something that “looked like an action-adventure-type movie, nostalgic and reminiscent of the old days,” suggesting something akin to “Castle in the Sky”.
