Nicolas Cage says that turning down offers in the past has led to him being dismissed from future projects by certain filmmakers.

Out doing promotional rounds for the launch this week of the “Spider-Noir” series on Amazon, Cage says he’s turned down job offers from several notable directors at some point, and only one of them has ever reached out to him again.

Two such people were Christopher Nolan and Paul Thomas Anderson with Cage originally offered roles in some of their earliest works including Nolan’s 2002 film “Insomnia” and possibly Anderson’s first feature “Hard Eight”.

Speaking with The New York Times, he says:

“David O. Russell offered me a movie a million years ago. It was a good movie, and he offered it and I said no, and he’s the only director that I ever said no to who actually came back and offered me another movie.

Most of them, they get their feelings hurt and don’t call you back. It’s happened a million times to me. It’s happened with Christopher Nolan, it’s happened with Woody Allen, it’s happened with Paul Thomas Anderson. They don’t call me back.

Anyway, David did call me, and it showed a lot of class that he would call me back and invite me again, and I didn’t want to say no to him again because I have great respect for his talent. And it was a beautiful experience. I enjoyed working with David. I enjoyed working with Christian [Bale], John Mulaney.”

It’s not clear what the film Russell offered Cage originally, but the one they did end up working together on was the Russell-helmed biopic “Madden” about John Madden, which opens in cinemas in November.

Meanwhile, “Spider-Noir” premieres today on MGM+ back-to-back before releasing in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video on Wednesday
