Sony’s TriStar Pictures and filmmaker Eli Roth are set to do a sequel to this year’s horror hit “Thanksgiving” which has grossed $30 million globally in its first two weeks and dropped just 31% in its second weekend – a rare feat for a horror film.
In addition, the film holds an impressive 83% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it Roth’s highest rated film to date. TriStar Pictures has already set a 2025 release theatrically worldwide for the follow-up.
The first film was based on the faux trailer that Roth made sixteen years ago for “Grindhouse” which follows a killer in a pilgrim costume. Said killer visits a small town in Massachusetts with the hopes of creating a carving board out of the town’s Turkey-loving inhabitants.
In the feature version, a Black Friday riot ends in tragedy, a mysterious Thanksgiving-inspired killer terrorizes Plymouth, Massachusetts – the birthplace of the holiday.
Picking off residents one by one, what begins as random revenge killings are soon revealed to be part of a larger, sinister holiday plan. Will the town uncover the killer and survive the holidays…or become guests at his twisted holiday dinner table?
Patrick Dempsey, Addison Rae, Milo Manheim, Jalen Thomas Brooks, Nell Verlaque, Rick Hoffman, Gina Gershon and Tim Dillon co-star. Roth directed and produced the project, while Jeff Rendel penned the screenplay.
Roth shot a film adaptation of the video game “Borderlands” which is due out next year.
