Monday’s Movie Memes… And Moan

As I said in the Weekend article on Friday, this Monday is a Bank Holiday. The family thought I was going to be spending it with them, but it’s also May the Fourth. I’m going to be in front of the TV watching the original trilogy. If the family try to disturb me, they will find themselves at the business end of a Luke Skywalker Force FX Master Replica Light Sabre 2005 edition!

What do you have to moan about this Monday? What did you watch over the weekend that needs a good grilling?

My moan is about The Green Mile. Firstly, don’t get me wrong, there is nothing to moan about this movie, but watching it again made me a little angry. The Green Mile is one of those movies that is perfect, lightning in a bottle, you might say.

Everything about this movie works: the cast, the story, the investment in the characters. It’s just over 3 hours, but it holds your attention all the way through. There’s a good ‘good guy’ in John Coffy, plus the guys who worked on the mile. A brilliant ‘bad guy’ in Percy, man, you hated his guts. You even loved Mr Jingles.

My Monday moan is that they really don’t make them like this anymore. I’ve said it before, but 1999 was one of the peak years for movies. You had Fight Club, The Matrix, Eyes Wide Shut, The Mummy, The Phantom Menace, Toy Story 2, The Sixth Sense, Office Space, The Iron Giant, The Blair Witch Project, American Pie, Austin Powers, and Galaxy Quest, to name a few.

We won’t see a year like 1999 again for a while.
