Welcome to Wrexham is an oasis of feel-good niceness in a sea of relentless entertainment misery.

The docuseries tells the story of American actor Rob McElhenney and Canadian-American actor Ryan Reynolds purchasing Wrexham A.F.C., an association football club based in the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, North East Wales in the United Kingdom. At the point of purchase, Wrexham A.F.C. was seemingly trapped in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, and way below the glitz and glamour of Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City in the Premier League.

They play at the oldest football stadium in the world and are the second oldest team in the history of football, but history was no help as the club was in dire straits, in danger of financial collapse. It was badly run, underinvested, and unloved.

Watching two Hollywood stars fall in love with the club, the community, and the game is part of the fun, leading to great moments such as seeing the two of them completely off their heads in a late-night drinking session in the local pub with passionate fans, and the local trailer company that was the club’s only sponsor getting two movie stars in their latest local television advert.

They start to understand why the whole world plays this sport, and the all-consuming nature of being a true football fan. This profoundly affects the pair. As Reynolds memorably puts it after a particularly emotional game:

“Football is a staggering, heartbreaking, gorgeous, tommy-gun of soul-deadening, evil, and beauty and I’m never sleeping again ever ever.”

Welcome to Wrexham followed the newly invigorated club as they completed the previously impossible task of gaining back-to-back-to-back promotion. Now, in season 5, they find themselves on the edge of greatness, promoted to the second tier of English football, just one step away from the Premier League. The Championship level is where faded Premier League teams go to die, along with the dreams of those who wish to pass them and go up to the Premier League.

The season has now been given a release date – May 14th on Hulu and FXX in the US, and Disney+ everywhere else in the world. Of course, we will be watching as the show has succeeded in making everyone just a little bit of a Wrexham fan.
