Actor/filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first “Thor” film back in 2011, says he wants to return to direct the last.

Branagh’s take on “Thor” in 2011 was an almost Shakespearean space opera, building the world of Asgard and delivering the first space-set film of the MCU – impacting everything that came after.

Speaking with Business Insider recently, Branagh revealed that he had been originally approached to direct “Thor: The Dark World” but declined as he didn’t want to go back to the well so soon:

“I definitely was ready for another, for sure, but not right then. Marvel shoots are intense. Marvel post-production is more intense – wildly exciting but super intense. I definitely needed to smell the roses. Kevin Feige was very understanding, and so was the cast. I needed a break.

I was thrilled to be asked. They were disappointed; they understood, but they were disappointed. They wanted to go straight away with a sequel, and why shouldn’t they? And I said to Kevin at that time, ‘I don’t have it in me.’”

Now, fifteen years later, Branagh says he’s quite ready to return to the MCU and added that he would love to direct another. In fact, he wants to do a “Logan”-style send-off for the character:

“Part of me would love to finish my relationship with that character. I’d always wanted to do more and indeed had a couple of ideas, more in the territory of James Mangold’s brilliant Logan. I would love to see Chris Hemsworth and the others have their own individual final story that takes Thor into a glorious twilight.”

Thor is currently set to appear in “Avengers: Doomsday,” Hemsworth’s tenth time in the role, while a fifth “Thor” film has been rumoured but not confirmed as yet.
