A haunting new vision of the apocalypse is taking flight as Ridley Scott returns with The Dog Stars, a character-driven sci-fi drama.

Based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller, the film explores a world devastated by a deadly virus — but unlike typical post-apocalyptic stories, there are no monsters. Instead, the danger comes from “Reapers,” ruthless scavengers preying on the last remnants of humanity.

At the center is Hig, played by Jacob Elordi, a pilot haunted by the loss of his wife. Living in isolation, he spends his days flying an old plane over empty landscapes — until a mysterious radio signal sparks a fragile sense of hope. Along the way, he crosses paths with survivors portrayed by Margaret Qualley and Josh Brolin, forming connections in a world where trust is scarce.

With a powerhouse supporting cast including Guy Pearce and Allison Janney, the film promises both scale and emotional depth.

Scott has teased that The Dog Stars will surprise audiences, delivering not just survival but a story about resilience, humanity, and the search for hope in a broken world.

The film is set to premiere in theaters on August 28
