China gave a somewhat surprising boost to Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, the third instalment in the franchise. This weekend, those crafty Eastern folks were major contributors as it pulled in $54.2 million overseas, on top of $21.4 million domestically for a $75.5 million opening weekend haul.

They have mostly been outright rejecting US movies recently in a tidal wave of patriotic fervor as they prepare for an invasion of Taiwan and daring the US to do something about it.

In second place, and looking like it may struggle, is The Running Man. It opened in 60 markets and came in just below expectations in the US with $17 million. It added another $11.2 million overseas for $28.2 million. This is against a budget of over $100 million.

Predator: Badlands was in third with $13 million domestic and a 68% drop. Overseas it was another $16.1 million.

Regretting You and Black Phone 2 rounded out the top 5, before we get to Nuremberg, which is slowly doing a low-key awards contender thing bubbling under but adding income, with another $2.6 million.

Keeper is looking like a bomb, grabbing only $2.5 million on release.
