Filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s next film will reportedly utilise a brand-new kind of IMAX technology.
The currently untitled film, starring Matt Damon and Tom Holland, follows Nolan’s massive critical and financial success with “Oppenheimer” last year.
Variety reports that IMAX CEO Richard Gelond made the announcement of Nolan’s film using new tech during a call with investors and analysts. He said:
“I’m pleased to share that Chris will be utilizing new Imax technology in the making of the film — never-before-used equipment that our teams have been developing through this past year.”
Just what that tech is wasn’t elaborated upon as the call was more about economic forecasts with IMAX aiming to earn $1.2 billion worldwide in 2025.
Nolan has famously used IMAX tech for many years starting with several sequences in “The Dark Knight” and kept increasing the amount of shooting on that format in subsequent projects including “Dunkirk” which was 70% shot in IMAX, and “Oppenheimer” which used new tech in the form of black-and-white IMAX.
There’s been a lot of rumors about what Nolan’s next film will be and increasingly the rumor gaining traction is the one about aerial helicopter police with a tale semi-inspired by the film “Blue Thunder”.
The project is releasing July 17th 2026 and is expected to hog all the IMAX screens for many weeks after that – keeping even Marvel Studios’ “Spider-Man 4” away from those large-format screens when it opens July 24th 2026.
