By “Smile 2” looks set to conquer the box-office this weekend. The title raked in $9.4 million on Friday, including more than $2 million in previews, resulting in a $23 million estimate for the Friday-Sunday period.
That number is just ahead of the first “Smile” which debuted with $22.6 million in late September before grossing more than $217 million worldwide against its $17 million budget.
Naomi Scott, Lukas Gage, Rosemarie DeWitt and Miles Gutierrez-Riley star in the sequel which has a slightly bigger budget but is still a relatively modest $28 million.
Parker Finn returns as writer/director in the follow-up in which a malevolent spirit is this time tormenting a troubled pop star (Naomi Scott) with a whole lot of trauma.
Reviews for the film have been like the box-office – about the same, probably a tiny bit better. In audience exit polls, the film earned a B CinemaScore from audiences – just above the B- of the first film.
“The Wild Robot” is expected to hold second place with $10.7 million in its fourth weekend as it crosses the $100 million mark domestically. Being made available on PVOD since Tuesday hasn’t hurt the film’s box-office whatsoever, the title’s fourth weekend drop being just 24% compared to the 26% drop last weekend.
Last week’s champ “Terrifier 3” is expected to come in third with around $9.8 million and a solid drop of just 48%. So far it has earned $36.7 million at the domestic box-office.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” at $5 million and “We Live in Time” at $4.3 million round out the top five. “Joker: Folie à Deux” will fall to sixth place in its third week with just $2.2 million – a drop of 68%.
Sean Baker’s “Anora” opens on five screens this weekend and is headed for a per-theater average of roughly $108,000 – the best number since Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City” last Summer.
