It’s coming up on nearly fifteen years since “Shrek Forever After,” the fourth film in that series,” graced our screens.
Since then the franchise has been somewhat dormant beyond the two “Puss in Boots” film which both made nearly half a billion each and the second one in 2022 scored near-universal acclaim along with franchise best reviews.
Now though, whilst out promoting Netflix’s upcoming release of “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” actor Eddie Murphy has confirmed not one but two “Shrek”-related projects are on the way.
Speaking with Collider, he confirms a fifth “Shrek” is not only coming but already well into production and should arrive in cinemas next year ahead of the franchise’s twenty-fifth anniversary in 2026. He also teases a spin-off about his character:
“We started doing Shrek 4 or [Shrek] 5 months ago. I did this, I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a Shrek, and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
Asked to clarify if he was recording for both projects simultaneously, he says:
“No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it’s coming out in 2025, and we’re doing a Donkey one next.”
Murphy has voiced the lovable Donkey since the original “Shrek” in 2001. The first two “Shrek” films were critically lauded with the original winning the Best Animated Feature Oscar. To date the franchise has generated over $4 billion in box-office from a budget of $755 million.
