Paramount officially announced its plans for a reboot of beloved 1988 comedy “The Naked Gun” in February with Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson set to star and a July 11th 2025 release date locked.
There have been plenty of questions and concerns about tackling a new take on such an iconic comedy, one that was so tied to its late star Leslie Nielsen.
One person concerned is David Zucker who, along with his brother Jerry Zucker and Jim Abrahams, produced the original “Naked Gun” film franchise along with iconic comedies like “Airplane!”.
Speaking with TMZ, David Zucker says he’s not only not involved in the new film but it was a shock to him when Paramount handed the franchise to a different set of creatives behind the scenes:
“We are not excited about having the franchise given to other people. At the time, I couldn’t believe it because we thought we had a great script, and they loved the script from what we heard. I don’t have any control over it. I’m not involved, and they haven’t asked me for my help…It’s completely their concept, and they’re just going to go ahead and do it.”
The script he’s referring to is one for a reboot he and partners Pat Proft and Mike McManus submitted to Paramount back in 2018 – one they thought the studio liked. However that’s not a part of this new take.
The 2022 “Chip n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers” movie team of director Akiva Schaffer and writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are behind this new version which Seth MacFarlane and Erica Huggins are producing.
