One of the original “Ghostbusters” cast has spoken about the 2016 reboot of the franchise which saw the cast replaced with a quartet of acclaimed female comedy actresses.
In a new interview with The Independent as part of promotional efforts for this weekend’s “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” original team member Ernie Hudson says he was disappointed with the Paul Feig-directed reboot.
He, like many others, was also confused over the point of the whole project:
“Look, I’m a fan of (2016 director) Paul Feig, so I have nothing negative about him to say other than: I don’t quite understand why you do a reboot, you know what I mean? Just make another movie.
Fans were really invested in the story and the characters and I think it was disappointing. I enjoyed the movie but I think it wasn’t what fans were hoping for.”
He adds that the 2016 cast members – Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones – were all “brilliantly funny on their own” but the film just didn’t click.
Hudson himself had a brief cameo in the film as an unrelated character. He also has praise for the studio which has allowed his character much more dimension than they originally did:
“Sony is not the same studio it was 40 years ago and they’ve really stepped up and given some dimension to the character. Credit to Sony for being open to hearing my feelings, because in the first one – they didn’t.”
“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” is now out in cinemas.
