Though it underwhelmed at the box-office with $208.2 million from a $150 million budget, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein’s “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” has already pulled in an enthusiastic fan following.
The title received praise from critics and has earned many new fans in the three years since its release, with people clicking with its humor, tone and performances.
Now, while out promoting their new action-comedy “Mayday,” Daley and Goldstein say rights holder Hasbro remains determined to find a new home for the sequel after Paramount-Skydance passed on making another.
They tell The Playlist that they they have already completed a screenplay for the proposed sequel and hope another studio will recognize the value of continuing the franchise. Asked whether anyone was still trying to make the economics work on a follow-up, they say:
Goldstein: “Yeah, absolutely, I think Hasbro is a big believer in it, and if they can figure out a studio partner to make it work, they’ll want to proceed. As are our producers.”
Daley: “I mean, look, it’s something that is near and dear to our hearts in that we loved making the first one. We fell in love with the characters, and there’s so much potential in a sequel because the first act isn’t filled with exposition or introduction to this family that we’ve already become accustomed to. So you can kind of launch right into the story, which is really nice. Yes, there are practical realities with the finance contingent, and who knows if it ever gets made, but we were proud of the sequel script and hope that at some point it does find a path.”
The first film’s financial failure is being partly seen as bad timing – it came out four days before “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and a month after Wizards of the Coast changed the official gaming license, which led fans to boycott the franchise for a period.
Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, and Sophia Lillis starred in the film.
