While Tom Holland has been selling Sony’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” as avoiding the usual Marvel issues and going into production with a solid script, it doesn’t mean changes weren’t made along the way.
One such change is the film’s primary villain. On the latest episode of The Q&A with Jeff Goldsmith podcast, co-writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers confirmed that Chameleon was originally going to be that character.
There was one catch though, Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter” film already featured the character. McKenna said:
“We were thinking, ‘God, what’s a classic Spider-Man villain that nobody has really done yet in the films?’ We were going, well, Chameleon. But how do you do that? We hit upon the idea of mind control. What if Chameleon was using mind control? But then, they already used Dimitri, Kraven’s half-brother, in Kraven. So we couldn’t do Chameleon.”
The writers stuck with the idea of a telepathic baddie, ultimately settling on a character who remains one of Marvel’s most iconic telepaths.
A bunch of other villains make appearances including: William Metzger, Savage Hulk, Scorpion, Tombstone, Boomerang, Tarantula, Shocker, and Ramrod.
Others rumored included Mister Negative, the Jackal, Rhino, Hammerhead, the Enforcers, and Paste-Pot Pete.
The comments come as The Wrap reports that 30-year-old Tom Holland looks set to earn over $100 million for the film – a combination of $20 million salary and backend bonuses awarded for the film’s box-office success. The actor earned $250,000 for his first appearance in the role ten years ago.
