Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of its 2016 animated hit “Moana” looks set to make its debut with an opening better than its progenitor.
The film hit tracking services the other day, and Deadline reports that the title is projected to make $85 million in its domestic opening weekend next month.
That’s well above the $56.5 million the original animated film opened to in 2016, but behind the eye-wagering $139.7 million that “Moana 2” debuted with.
The number is very close to the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” which debuted with $84.6 million and ultimately grossed $636 million.
17-year-old Australian actress Catherine Laga’aia (“The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart”) plays the title role alongside Dwayne Johnson who reprises his role as the demigod Maui.
In the film, Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
Thomas Kail directs from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. The live-action “Moana” movie is set to release in cinemas on July 10th.
