If you were on social media at all last weekend, chances are you saw what was claimed to be a leak of over a minute of unfinished footage from Marvel Studios’ “Avengers: Doomsday”.
The clip, watermarked to high heaven and in incredibly low-resolution to almost look like an 8-bit game, showed what seemed to be the film’s version of the circling hero shot from the original “Avengers”.
In it, we could see Thor, Steve Rogers, Shang-Chi, Yelena Belova, Sam Wilson/Captain America, Reed Richards and several X-Men (Gambit, Cyclops, Mystique, Nightcrawler) on a rocky ground as giant figures with glowing green eyes, seemingly Sentinels, moved under the control of Dr. Doom and was swatting at them.
The obviously unfinished VFX and poor quality were seen as simply someone trying to add legitimacy to an AI-generated video, and when the clips were NOT hit by copyright takedown notices, that seemed to be that.
In the days since, at least three photos from a higher-quality version of the clip emerged with one including some background detail seemingly matching set photos snapped last year, according to CBM. The has, once again, led to discussion about the legitimacy of the original clip.
The talk comes as Robert Downey Jr. spoke about his take on Doctor Doom and the film itself, telling CBR that “There’s something going on in Doomsday and forward that is literally the only antidote to, ‘How do you not have these films be let down after an Infinity War and an Endgame?’ And boy, have we labored long and hard to bring that down.”
He adds that he thinks the film is the “most emotionally complex” and “most mature” of all of the Russos’ Marvel films. “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to hit cinemas on December 18th.
