Filmmaker James Cameron turns 72 this month, but he’s not retiring just yet, as he says he’s already started planning out the twilight years of his career.
Cameron most recently directed “Avatar: Fire & Ash,” the third installment in the costly sci-fi franchise. While still pulling in massive numbers, the series has seen a notable box-office drop compared to its predecessors.
In a new legacy interview with Denise Donlon, tied to Cameron receiving the Canadian Governor General Lifetime Achievement Award, the filmmaker says he’s still very interested in finishing the overall five-film saga that he started:
“When I shifted into the ‘Avatar’ world, which was 2005, I went down that path [of naturism]. I’m still kind of midway in that saga. I have films I want to make outside of that world. But you know that’s not even a story that’s finished for me…Three out of five, and counting.”
That said, he’s also open to handing off the sequels to other filmmakers as he considers other productions outside of the franchise that has occupied him for much of the past twenty years:
“So this is the point where I’m looking at the landscape and asking, ‘What are the other stories I want to tell? How many of them do I need to direct myself versus writing and/or producing with other filmmakers?
And the criterion I’ve literally mapped this out for myself over the last two weeks: I started with, ‘What will do the most good?’ I put that in block letters at the top. And I started looking at all the projects I’m most fond of, asking, ‘How’s this going to improve our condition? How’s that going to make the world better for our kids?’…
I haven’t made any decisions yet. I’m still in this liminal state of mapping out, you know, kind of the last act. And I don’t know if that last act will last a year or 20 years.”
Cameron already shot some scenes for the fourth film during the production of “Avatar: Fire & Ash,” but Disney has yet to give the go-ahead on the next two movies. Meanwhile, Cameron has multiple other projects in development including “The Devils,” “Fantastic Voyage” and a new “Terminator”.
