Adriano Goldman, a cinematographer on HBO’s “Harry Potter” series, says filming on the series has been ‘brutal’ due to the very strict shooting schedules of its young cast members.
It was reported a year ago now that Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the home base for the series, built a temporary school for the show’s many young actors, which is expected to run for the next decade.
The proposed classrooms operate on weekdays between 5:30 am and 8:30 pm so young actors can fit in their actual studies between night shoots, reshoots and location filming.
The result is the kids only have short windows during the day when they can film, which can be a pain for a lenser like Goldman who tells Andre Pilli (via Variety):
“You have to shoot really fast, and the faster you go, the more you compromise quality. There’s no way around it, right? Obviously, we have a lot of resources, but it’s brutal. The kids’ screen time is really brutal. So the methodology is very specific. You practically have to pre-shoot all the scenes while they’re in class… It’s really hard; you shoot everything out of order, right, because of that kind of scheduling. So the process is really complicated, but I’ve done one now.
HBO is planning a seven-season adaptation of the books, each season set to tackle one novel in J.K. Rowling’s series. Dominic McLaughlin stars as Harry alongside Arabella Stanton and Alastair Stout stepping into the roles of Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley.
John Lithgow plays headmaster Dumbledore, Janet McTeer is Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu is Snape and Nick Frost is Rubeus Hagrid. The show is set to launch this December exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.
