DC’s “Supergirl” opened this weekend at the box-office and has already been written off in some corners.

The film landed mixed critical reviews, a B- CinemaScore from audiences, and a $38 million domestic and $68 million worldwide opening weekend box-office for a $170 million budgeted film. That’s not good.

Previously, it was indicated that it had to reach just $300 million to break even. It seemed a dubious number, but the film was helped along by a huge number of collaborations (over 80) with other brands to help keep the marketing spend low.

Even so, The Wrap reports the movie is now unlikely to reach that number and adds that it’s “extremely unlikely” that the film will pass the $271 million global total of 2023 flop “The Flash”.

Not helping is the demographic data which indicates 59% of the audience was male and 65% aged over 25 – the key demographic they wanted of young women didn’t show up for the film.

Now, in a statement today to the New York Times, DC Studios co-chairman and co-chief executive Peter Safran says they’re confident in the course he and Gunn have set for the franchise:

“While ‘Supergirl’ didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.”

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “SUPERGIRL”

In a recent interview with CBR, director Craig Gillespie also spoke about the film’s ending and confirmed it was co-CEO James Gunn who pushed for Kara to have a “Man of Steel”-esque moment with her killing the villain:

“It was in the script from the get-go. I met with James, and we talked about it, and James was adamant about it. I think it’s an amazing thing. To lean into – knowing the kind of movie that we’re making, and where her character is heading, that she has to go through this emotional journey. There’s no other logical conclusion to what she would do.

And [the fact] that he doubled down on that, I loved. Even to the point of, you go through the whole system shooting, and there were whispers of like, ‘Do we shoot a backup? Is there something else in case the testing goes south?’ And James constantly was like, ‘Nope, we don’t need a backup. We’re good.’ And I was like, ‘You don’t have to tell me twice!’”

“Supergirl” is now playing in cinemas everywhere.
