A planned live-action series incarnation of the famed 1990s animated TV series “Gargoyles” has been scrapped.
Back in late 2023, news came that writer/producer Gary Dauberman (“IT,” “The Nun”) and James Wan’s Atomic Monster label, which produced the acclaimed but short-lived live-action “Swamp Thing” series, were behind the project.
Dauberman was slated to write, executive produce and showrun the series based on the Walt Disney Television Animation series, which ran from 1994-1997 and became a cult classic.
Those reports followed months after rumours in early 2023 suggesting Kenneth Branagh was slated to direct a “Gargoyles” movie. The franchise’s creator Greg Weisman quickly shot down that talk – but the TV series was legitimate.
Now, in a new interview with Comics Online, Weisman revealed the TV series is dead:
“Well, I know the live-action side of it is, uh, the Atomic Monster had the license to develop a live-action Gargoyles for Disney+, and that’s dead. I have no idea about animation, but there are no current plans for live-action.”
It follows in the wake of a number of cancellations of proposed Disney+ live-action projects recently, including a second season of “Wonder Man” and a planned “Power Rangers” reboot.
Keith David, Ed Asner and Jonathan Frakes lent their voices to the original animated series which premiered in 1994 and ran for three seasons, a total of 78 episodes and followed a clan of gargoyles as heroes transplanted from the 10th century to the modern day.
Back in the Middle Ages, most of the clan was killed, and the survivors were cursed to be frozen in stone until their castle reached above the clouds.
A billionaire buys the castle and has it transported to, and reconstructed atop, his New York City skyscraper – awakening the creatures from their slumber. The gargoyles must protect the city and its people from various supernatural challenges.
Weisman also created “The Spectacular Spider-Man” series but doesn’t expect it will be revived: “It seems unlikely. I wish I could say otherwise, but nothing would make me happier. I’d love to be wrong and get another chance to do it.”
