Big news in the world of Doctor Who. A new Christmas special, planned for this year, has been cancelled. Showrunner Russell T. Davies is also to exit the show.
The BBC will instead run an open, competitive tender to allow other companies to co-produce the show, as they did with Disney for the last two seasons.
Netflix and Amazon were already said to be interested in a potential partnership.
Davies posted on Instagram:
“…goodbye from me but hello to a big new future for the show”.
He made light of the Christmas Special cancellation, saying:
“We only cooked that up to guarantee a future when no one knew what would happen, but now we do know, there’s no need for it.
You’ll have to wait a bit longer for new Doctor Who… but you’ll be waiting for more Doctor Who than a one-off. So it’s worth it!
For the record: there was no script, I never wrote it, and no actor was ever approached to play the next Doctor.”
In a statement, the BBC said the decision to cancel the Christmas episode was made “after careful consideration” and “had not been taken lightly”.
The last series of Doctor Who aired in May 2025 and was the end of Ncuti Gatwa in the role.
The BBC also said that rather than use a one-off special to bridge a gap, they are:
“…choosing to push forward to invest in the long-term future of the show which ensures that when the Tardis lands once more, it does so in all its glory.”
There was a rumor that, due to the baggage that had become attached to the show during Davies’ most recent run, they were struggling to find anyone to take on the role of the Doctor, formerly one of the most sought after roles on British television.
