Actor Matthew Lillard has confirmed that “Scream 7” had a post-credits stinger filmed, one that would’ve changed the fate of his character.

SPOILERS AHEAD FOR “SCREAM 7”

The recent film spends a good portion of its runtime suggesting Lillard’s Stu Macher character from the original 1996 “Scream” is still alive. It’s ultimately revealed that the real killers were using AI deepfakes of Stu for the video calls in which he’s seen.

Speaking at a Fan Expo Denver panel recently (via Screen Rant), Lillard confirmed a post-credits scene for the film was shot that would’ve made it clear that his character had, in fact, survived.

However, the scene didn’t play well in test screenings, so it was cut from the film:

“[I told Kevin Williamson], we spent the entire movie proving that Stu is alive, and then if he doesn’t come out that door people are going to be bummed. So, what we should do, is we should shoot a post-credit sequence where it’s just Stu watching TV somewhere, alive.

Yeah, we shot it. I will say, when they showed it [to test audiences], they showed it without credits. So, they go to the end, and then they show me in a reflection watching TV, and it didn’t work…So, it didn’t work because they didn’t test it right, but I think it would have been completely [different with the credits].”

“Scream 7” ultimately scored the worst critical aggregate scores of the franchise, despite becoming the highest-grossing entry in the horror series with $207 million. “Scream 7” is now available to stream on the Paramount+ service.
