The final numbers are coming in, and the opening of “The Mandalorian and Grogu” is heading for what’s expected at the box-office – an $81 million three-day and a $100 million four-day Memorial Day holiday weekend haul.
While that’s the softest start for a “Star Wars” title behind “Solo: A Star Wars Story” at $103 million, Mando’s opening weekend international haul of $63 million from overseas territories has pushed it $10 million above the 2018 film’s $153 million worldwide start.
While another straight-up Mando film seems unlikely with these numbers, it certainly seems as if this won’t be the last time we see either The Mandalorian or Grogu in the “Star Wars” universe.
The film’s director Jon Favreau recently spoke with EW and says he has ideas for where Grogu’s story is ultimately heading:
“I think about it creatively, and so for me it’s like a garden or a greenhouse with all the different storylines and characters. I see opportunity in all of them, because these storylines have taken on a life of their own, and I love the progression of these characters, and I like to think forward as to what’s the next step for both of them.”
He says their future is a “wide open canvas” and indicates he and new Lucasfilm chief Dave Filoni are planning out where things go:
“[We’re] thinking deeply and about the larger story, about how all the characters [like Ahsoka and Thrawn] all fit together, and understanding the timeframe and how it leads into the next era of Star Wars. So I think that there’s a lot of higher-order strategic decisions that Dave is making that this will fit into, but from my perspective, I have a lot of notes and ideas as to where I think things might go within this small microcosm within Star Wars.”
The film, of course, was born out of a previously planned fourth season that was put on hold when they switched to doing a theatrical presentation. Next for this part of the “Star Wars” timeline is the second season of “Ahsoka” in early 2027. Further plans beyond that haven’t been revealed.
