Netflix’s Adolescence sparked a real debate when it screened. It was held up as “important”, shining a light into the rise of so-called “incel culture”. On the other side of the debate were child psychologists and educators, decrying that the series amplified fear-based parenting without offering constructive solutions.

The more mainstream concern about the deification of Adolescence by governments was that it came at a time when foreign rape gangs were being exposed, and statistics showed violence against women and young girls was skewed towards certain demographics. This led to criticism that it unfairly depicted the white working-class, particularly young boys, in a violent light.

The other criticism was that it depicted the online “manosphere” as some nefarious pipeline towards rape and knives, as opposed to a deeply tragic and comical prick parade led by hilarious figures to be mocked mercilessly.

Phew! After all that, no wonder the makers want to tackle something more… lightweight?

The Hollywood Reporter says Philip Baranti is again teaming with Netflix to remake the 1972 Steve McQueen classic The Getaway. The original was directed by Sam Peckinpah and written by the great Walter Hill. It was based on a novel by Jim Thompson.

McQueen and Ali McGraw played an ex-con and his wife who rob a Texas bank but find themselves caught in a double-cross and forced to go on the run. Another remake was made in 1994 with then-married Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger taking over the McQueen and Ali McGraw roles.

Peter Craig (The Town) will produce with Bryan Unkeless. Barantini, Andrew Mittman, and Samantha Beddoe.
