With “Edge of Tomorrow 2” still in early development, a third “Top Gun” unlikely to shoot until 2027 or 2028 at the earliest, and the costly underwater film “Deeper” stuck in limbo right now, Tom Cruise has a scheduling window – and it looks like it’s about to be taken.
The InSneider reports that Cruise is in early discussions for the lead role in “Doppelgänger,” a new original spy thriller set up at Paramount Pictures.
The project is set to be helmed by “Searching” director Aneesh Chaganty who co-wrote the script with Dan Frey. “Black Panther” filmmaker Ryan Coogler is slated to produce.
The outlet claims Chaganty has reportedly met with Cruise multiple times in Florida and is actively rewriting the script to suit him, though Cruise has not formally committed and is expected to decide only after seeing a finalised draft.
At present, he’s only ‘loosely attached’. If he does sign on, he would play a CIA Agent named Veer who discovers that Russian intelligence has found a Brazilian man who is his exact double, intending to replace him as a covert mole inside the CIA.
Paramount acquired the script last summer and has become a priority for Paramount chief David Ellison, who has reportedly already invested several million into the film’s development.
