The Anthony Mackie-led “Desert Warrior” is reportedly on track to become one of the biggest box-office flops of all time.
The film follows a princess who flees into the Arabian desert as she’s hunted by mercenaries. Forged into a warrior and aided by a legendary bandit (Mackie), she unites warring tribes for a last stand that will alter the course of history.
Ben Kingsley, Sharlto Copley and Aiysha Hart co-star in the film, which was directed by Rupert Wyatt (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”) at least until he walked away from the project for a while during post-production according to Deadline.
The film ultimately took around six years to produce due to assorted delays. Reviews were extremely negative, with a 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and an IMDb score of 1.9/10.
Then you have the complication of it being a $150 million budgeted film primarily backed by Saudi Arabia in their most ambitious effort in film production to date.
The result is “Desert Warrior” ultimately opened in U.S. cinemas last weekend to a disastrous $483 per-screen average and total haul of just $487,848 from a little over 1,000 screens – one of the worst box office openings of all time and is already being labelled as one of the biggest box-office bombs of all time.
