Disney+ has landed a new live-action TV series take on the “Casper the Friendly Ghost” IP.
The Mouse House won a five-way bidding war for the title with “Goosebumps” executive producers Rob Letterman and Hilary Winston spearheading the project backed by Universal Studio Group’s UCP.
Steven Spielberg, who executive-produced the prior 1995 film, is also on board as executive producer.
Specifics of this take on the property are under wraps, but it is said to be a modern update on the classic ghost story and in the very early stages of development.
It will also likely have a darker edge than the old films, something a bit more akin to Netflix’s “Wednesday”. Letterman and Winston are writing, with Letterman set to direct.
The likable translucent spectre featured in a string of animated movies between 1945 and 1959, became a comic staple, and then was revived with the 1995 live-action feature starring Christina Ricci. A previous attempt to create a series took place back in 2022 but didn’t move forward.
