Well, this is a little bit embarrassing. Both Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker have reportedly passed on Rush Hour 4, rejecting the early offers made for them to reprise their roles. According to Puck News., Paramount Pictures offered them $8 million each. The report says they earned $20 million each for the previous entry, Rush Hour 3.
This is clearly the start of a negotiation. The movie really needs them to stand any chance, but things have changed. Jackie Chan’s US career stalled out somewhat after Rush Hour 3, with The Karate Kid movies and the underrated The Foreigner as his only notable projects. Tucker hasn’t headlined a movie since Rush Hour 3.
So they both need Rush Hour 4, just not for as lowball an offer as $12 million lower than their fee for the last instalment.
Director Brett Ratner needs this movie too, as he was #MeToo’d, and his latest attempt at a comeback was the widely panned Melania documentary. This movie was circling financing based on a budget of no more than $120 million. How much fat is there to boost the two lead offers?
Whereas I would rip their arm off for $8 million, in Hollywood, you are only ever paid based on your last fee, and the success of your last movie. Rock, meet hard place.
Schedules were planned, and filming was set for this summer in China, Africa, and Saudi Arabia. The report says this will now be delayed to September at the earliest. Producers Arthur Sarkissian and Tarak Ben Ammar will now be furiously fingering their calculators.
