Former “Banshee,” “The Blacklist” and “Counterpart” alum Ulrich Thomsen has scored the recurring role of the DC villain Sinestro in the HBO, WBTV and DC Studios series “Lanterns”.

Sinestro is a former Green Lantern turned rogue, both ruthless yet undeniably charming. His manipulative nature drives his enduring obsession with his former protege Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler).

Boasting a gritty “True Detective” vibe, the series follows Hal, a legend amongst the space police force known as the Green Lanterns. He is reluctantly mentoring John Stewart (Aaron Pierre), a younger Green Lantern.

The two intergalactic cops get drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland. Also onboard are Kelly MacDonald as town sheriff Kerry, Garret Dillahunt as a ruthless cowboy named William Macon, and Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe.

The series is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King, with the first two episodes directed by James Hawes.

Mark Strong previously played a live-action version of Sinestro in the 2011 film “Green Lantern” starring Ryan Reynolds. The character, known for his yellow variation of the Lantern outfit, red skin, and distinct hair and moustache, has appeared in multiple animated television series and films, with actors such as Ted Levine, Miguel Ferrer, Xander Berkeley, Ron Perlman, Victor Garber, and Jason Isaacs voicing him.
