Kaitlyn Dever is in negotiations to join the cast of the next film in the “Godzilla x Kong” franchise following 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” and 2024’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”.
Grant Sputore will take over as director on the film, stepping in for Adam Wingard who directed the last two entries. Dave Callaham penned the script for the new one.
The new movie is dubbed a continuation of Legendary’s Monster-verse franchise centering on Godzilla, Kong and other Titans. “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” became the franchise’s highest-grossing instalment with $571.9 million at the worldwide box office.
According to Deadline, Legendary is looking to build out its human characters more, including Dever’s role, so they should not only get a bit more dramatic fare to chew into but also potentially return for further entries.
The project marks the latest sequel to Legendary’s Monsterverse movie, which began back with 2014’s “Godzilla” reboot and has run through “Kong: Skull Island,” “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” the two GvK films, and Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” which is getting a second season. The overall franchise has grossed more than $2.5 billion at the global box office.
Dever broke through with “Booksmart” and Hulu series “Dopesick,” and is about to reach all new levels of fame both as the lead of Netflix limited series “Apple Cider Vinegar” and in the key role of Abby in the second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us”.
