Fede Alvarez’s “Alien: Romulus” film unveiled a new trailer this week to what has been a mostly very good reception, but it’s not the only work based on the property on the way.
The other is the more mysterious “Alien” TV series in the work at FX. We do know it serves as a prequel to Ridley Scott’s 1979 original and has been in production in Thailand for sometime after having to stop due to the strikes.
Appearing on Deadline’s Crew Call podcast recently, Hawley says the network is very happy with the show’s progress so far, so much so that they want to get moving on more asap:
“They’re saying maybe don’t do two things at once on this show. Their hope is to put a season two as close to season one as possible.”
Hawley was also asked about Scott’s involvement in the series. Turns out beyond an initial chat way back in early development, he’s not involved.
He joked about Scott’s tireless work ethic: “In the four years it’s taken me to launch this show, he’s made how many movies?” before explaining that he’s adopting the aesthetic of Scott’s original film as opposed to his “Prometheus” movies:
“What I said to Ridley is ‘I’m adapting your movie’. I had to make a decision – retro futurism or ‘Prometheus’? And I chose retro-futurism. When I close my eyes and you say ‘Alien’ to me, I see that green Ascii text. You know, I hear that sound. I see that keyboard with the weird Egyptian ruins on it. I see those hallways.”
The story will focus on the emergence of the franchise’s corporate juggernaut, Weyland-Yultani Corp. Hawley confirmed his directing commitments for the first season are done, but production is continuing through July due to the VFX work.
The series is still on track to launch on FX sometime in 2025.
