Earlier this week the box-office predictions for Legendary’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” stood at a solid $55 million or so for its domestic Easter weekend debut.
Those projections are now out the window as the film hauled in a reported $31 million on Friday (which includes $10 million in previews). As a result, projections are being revised upwards considerably with the three-day figure now tipped to conservatively be at $67 million.
Others are suggesting it could go as high as $80 million. Either way, it’s now expected to have the second-best stateside start for a Legendary Monsterverse film, behind only 2014’s “Godzilla” at $93 million.
Whilst reviews have been mixed, so far exit polls from audience members have been decidedly more gushing with a five-star score on PostTrak.
The film will lead a busy weekend at the box-office with “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” targeting a $14 million second place weekend haul. Its $5 million Friday haul was a 68% drop on last week, suggesting it won’t have a long life.
Faring better in repeat business is “Kung Fu Panda 4” which is headed for a $10.8 million third place take, “Dune: Part Two” in fourth with $10.5 million and “Immaculate” in fifth with $2.8 million.
