Angela Bassett found herself becoming a meme last year when the actress lost the Oscar for best supporting actress to Jamie Lee Curtis.
Bassett was up for her work as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” whilst Curtis was there for her part as IRS agent Deirdre Beaubeirdre in “Everything Everywhere All At Once”. Both were the frontrunners for the award and it was expected to be close.
Curtis won, but as she did Bassett sat stone faced, lips pursed and obviously trying to control her disappointment. Now, in an interview with Oprah Winfrey for OWN, she got candid about how she felt on the night.
Winfrey said “people are saying your disappointment showed, but I thought you handled it really well” to which Bassett responded:
“I thought I handled it very well, also. And that was my intention, to handle it very well. It was, of course, a supreme disappointment, and disappointment is human. So I thought, yes, I was disappointed, and I handled it like a human being.
There are going to be these moments of disappointment that they’re going to experience, but how do you handle yourself in the midst of them? So, we’re going to smile, we’re going to be gracious, we’re going to be kind, we’re going to party – anyway.”
It marked Bassett’s second nomination, the first being for best actress in “What’s Love Got to Do with It” which she also didn’t win. In January this year however, Bassett received an honorary Oscar at the Governor Awards.
