“Mad Max Fury Road” director George Miller returns to the wasteland with the upcoming spin-off film “Furiosa” opening in May.
Ahead of its release, the filmmaker has given one of his first interviews about the movie with Empire, saying it will be a film that fans won’t expect.
Interestingly, he indicates the story will span a longer timeline than prior “Mad Max” films which have generally spanned a few days or weeks each.
He tells the outlet is a saga of Furiosa as a character, and thus will cover a long period in her life:
“The story is the saga of Furiosa, and how she gets taken from home, and spends the rest of her life trying to get back.
[In] Fury Road, the story unfolds over three days and two nights. This film follows the story that runs directly into Fury Road, for 15 years. It’s a different animal. It’s got many different locations. It’s an odyssey. No question.”
As it runs directly into ‘Fury Road’, does that mean we’ll see Max? Miller sayys: “I won’t give away too much about that. All I’ll say is, Max is lurking there in the background.”
The film will see a young Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers and falling into the hands of a great Biker Horde led by the Warlord Dementus (Chris Hemsworth).
Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel presided over by The Immortan Joe. While the two Tyrants war for dominance, Furiosa must survive many trials as she puts together the means to find her way home.
Alyla Browne, Nathan Jones, Angus Sampson, Quaden Bayles, Daniel Webber and Lachy Hulme co-star in the film which came in at an eye-watering $230 million budget and opens everywhere on May 24th.
