Specifics of the story that James Gunn’s new “Superman” film will have are under wraps, though some guesses have already been made.
As we know, the film will deal with Clark Kent’s role at the Daily Planet and showcase his relationship with Lois Lane, both of whom are already at work at the outlet (so no origin story).
We also know it will be in a world that has superheroes already with several popping up here in the cast. Now, Gunn has shared a post on Instagram sharing pictures of works he considers inspirations for his take beyond the already stated Richard Donner film, “All-Star Superman” comic and “Smallville” TV series.
Amongst the images shown are a scene from “All-Star Superman” when he talks a suicidal teenager off a ledge, a scene from “Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow” in which Superman is sitting down and crying, and a contemplative shot from “Superman: For All Seasons”.
There’s also a shot from the beloved 1990s “Superman: The Animated Series,” and a shot from the 1941 animated film “Superman: The Mad Scientist”.
The film stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Edi Gathegi as Mr. Terrific and Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner version of Green Lantern.
“Superman” soars up, up and into cinemas on July 11th 2025.
