FOX has closed a deal for a new version of the iconic California lifeguards series “Baywatch” from producer Fremantle.
Lara Olsen (“90210,” “Spinning Out”) will serve as showrunner for the new take on the show created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann. All four will serve as executive producers.
The synopsis reads: “Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born into and the family you find.”
David Hasselhoff led the original series which ran from 1989-1999 and was retooled as “Baywatch Hawaii” from 1999-2001. It also scored a brief spin-off “Baywatch Nights” from 1995-1997, whilst Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron led the 2017 film adaptation/spoof.
The show was syndication sensation, airing in more than 145 countries which was the widest distribution of any series at the time. It was known for its red swimsuits, cheesy storylines, and lots of fit bodies doing slow-mo running.
Pamela Anderson, Jason Momoa, David Chokachi, Yasmin Bleeth, Alexandra Paul, Carmen Electra, Erika Eleniak, Nicole Eggert, Billy Warlock, Jason Simmons and David Charvet co-starred.
