Warner Bros. Pictures has premiered the official trailer for M. Night Shyamalan’s latest thriller Trap, which opens in cinemas on August 9th.

This is a psychological thriller that Shyamalan shot last year in Canada. Trap follows a man who takes his daughter to a pop concert featuring his daughter’s favorite artist. However, it turns out the entire concert and everything to do with it is a staged event by cops to catch a brutal serial killer known as The Butcher.

Now, I am not a follower of Shyamalan’s movies in general, so my knowledge of this movie was limited.

Within about 30 seconds of the trailer starting, I thought “Well, you can clearly see what the expected Shyamalan twist is going to be here!” – and then it completely leans into that, confirms it, takes that away from you as a twist, and therefore makes you think there must be something else entirely still to come. On that basis, I can’t help but be intrigued.

It seems to be shot and staged in a much more straightforward way than many of Shyamalan’s efforts

Josh Hartnett stars as the father, Hayley Mills plays a Doctor who is somehow involved, while Shyamalan’s R&B singer-songwriter daughter Saleka plays the concert’s act Lady Raven.

Ariel Donoghue and Allison Pill co-star in Trap. It is produced by Ashwin Rajan, Marc Bienstock, and Shyamalan.

Due to Shyamalan producing and financing his own films, the production was granted an interim agreement to be allowed to film during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike.
