By Filmmaker Rob Reiner made his directorial debut with the 1984 cult classic “This Is Spinal Tap,” and is now returning forty years later to film a follow-up.
Reiner revealed the news on the RHLSTP With Richard Herring podcast (via Variety) and says shooting on the sequel will reportedly kick off in February.
England’s sauciest heavy metal band – David St. Hubbins (Michael McKean), Derek Smalls (Harry Shearer), and Nigel Tufnel (Christopher Guest) – all return along with Reiner as the documentarian Martin ‘Marty’ Di Bergi. Tony Hendra, who played the band’s manager Ian Faith, has passed away.
The story sees Ian’s widow inheriting a contract that says Spinal Tap owed them one more concert and she will sue them if they don’t do it. As a result the band, which hasn’t spent any time together recently, are thrown back together and forced to deal with each other and play this concert.
Also onboard are real life music icons Paul McCartney, Elton John and Garth Brooks. The sequel will reportedly mimic the style of Martin Scorsese’s concert film “The Last Waltz” in structure.
The project was being sold at Cannes last year ahead of a March 19th 2024 release, but the strikes pushed back filming and no new release date has been set. The original was released to critical acclaim in 1984 and is one of the few selected for preservation by the National Film Registry
