Searchlight Pictures has premiered the first trailer for “Poor Things,” the latest effort from “The Favorite,” “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” director Yorgos Lanthimos.
The fantastical and “Frankenstein”-esque tale follows the evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe).
Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, she runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents.
Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation. The trailer reveals a film with a look that feels like a blend of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Wes Anderson after eating a very dodgy yet likely perfectly symmetrical burrito.
Margaret Qualley, Ramy Youssef, Jerrod Carmichael, Kathryn Hunter and Christopher Abbott co-star.
Stone also produces the film alongside Ali Herting, Dave McCary, Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe. Lanthimos re-teams with his “The Favorite” scribe Tony McNamara, currently getting raves for the third season of his Hulu series “The Great,” to pen the script.
