One of last year’s feel-good stories was that of Japanese studio Toho’s “Godzilla Minus One” racking up major critical acclaim and box-office, especially outside of its home country.

The film has been praised by numerous filmmakers from Steven Spielberg to Guillermo del Toro, and most recently won the Oscar for visual effects. Now it has scored another major fan – none other than Best Director Oscar winner Christopher Nolan.

Speaking about director Takashi Yamazaki’s film via Film Updates, he says:

“I thought it was a tremendous film. I thought it was so exciting. It’s beautifully made and the mechanics of it were so involving. There was wonderful depth to the characters and a wonderful sense of history that I really appreciated.”

The project was made on a reported budget of just $12-15 million, almost unheard of for a film featuring the hundreds of elaborate visual effects shots this uses. The film ultimately pulled in over $107 million worldwide at the box-office.

Yamazaki has previously hinted at making a film in response to Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” offering a Japanese counterpart to the events portrayed.
