We often ask why Hollywood can’t seem to make anything different? Well, here is different! 20th Century Studios has beaten out a raft of other bidders for the rights to Whalefall. This is a new project set up by Imagine Entertainment and based on a recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus.
It is described as a thriller, and:
“The Martian meets 127 Hours”
Owen King, a New York Times bestselling author, describes it as:
“…smart, surreal, and powerfully humane…”
The book follows a scuba diver who goes in search of his deceased father’s remains. During his search, he gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. Initially giving up on life, the despondent young man is surprised to find a reason to live in this most dangerous and unlikely of places – inside a whale.
Somebody with big experience in areas needed to pull this off is attached to co-write, direct, and produce. No One Will Save You was almost dialogue-free, and director Brian Duffield is now attached to Whalefall. He also wrote the Kristen Stewart-led horror Underwater, so has previous soggy experience.
Kraus will co-write the film with Duffield, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Allan Mandelbaum set to produce.
No release date is set.
