Last year’s third and final season of “Star Trek: Picard” was a rousing success and quickly led to talk of a potential spin-off series dubbed “Star Trek: Legacy”.

That spin-off show would continue the adventures of the younger crew of the new Enterprise (NCC-1701-G) with its Captain Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan), first officer Raffaela ‘Raffi’ Musiker (Michelle Hurd), captain’s counselor Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), and several of the other younger characters introduced.

At the same time, several “Star Trek: The Next Generation” cast members could also return. Showrunner Terry Matalas previously indicated he has spoken with “Star Trek” franchise chief Alex Kurtzman about it, but nothing was in development in the months after “Picard” finale.

Unfortunately in a new update, there’s not only been no progress but according to Matalas in a recent interview with TrekMovie, he confirms there’s still been no movement and infers that it appears to be dead:

“There’s not [any movement]. They have ‘Star Trek’ that they are making and they only have so much money and streaming space. There’s currently not, but we’re looking forward to whatever the ‘Star Trek’ universe brings … and never say never.”

Streaming has seen a recent contraction industry wide with studios pulling back on new projects. The resurgence of “Star Trek” on Paramount+ has been emblematic of that with “Picard” and “Discovery” coming to an end, “Prodigy” cancelled and sold off to Netflix, and a “Section 31” series turned into a movie.

The interviewer then asked if Matalas would be okay with adapting “Star Trek: Legacy” into a two-hour TV movie instead of a series. He responded:

“Look, anything is possible. We certainly wouldn’t be ‘Oh no, we aren’t going to do a movie.’ For me, I would just need this crew, I would need this cast, and as long as that was a possibility, we would figure something out, yeah. A series is obviously ideal because there are so many stories to tell. And the 25th century in general in ‘Star Trek’ is such a rich thing.”

Only two Trek shows are on air on Paramount+ right now – “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” and the animated “Star Trek: Lower Decks,” both of which have at least one more season coming.
