The relatively quiet start to the 2024 box-office looks set to continue next month with the mid-February President’s Day holiday weekend seeing two films debuting to soft starts.
Both the musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love” starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the reggae legend, and the Sony-Marvel film “Madame Web” starring Dakota Johnson as a clairvoyant, open on Wednesday, February 14th.
The former is said to be targeting a $27-33 million launch over the six-day period whilst “Web” is eyeing $25-35 million. In comparison, Disney and Marvel’s “Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” debuted to $120.3 million in the weekend last year.
Despite an opening for ‘Web’ that will come in under the debut for “Morbius” ($39 million), only one other film opening in February is currently tracking at $20 million or above – “Argylle” which hits next Friday and is looking to snag $20-30 million.
‘Web’ serves as a standalone origin story and follows paramedic in Manhattan who develops the power to see the future… and realises she can use that insight to change it.
Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women bound for powerful destinies…if they can all survive a deadly present. SJ Clarkson directs the film.
