StudioCanal has reportedly been planning a reboot of the iconic 1960s television series “The Avengers” with Warner Bros. Discovery-owned Wall to Wall co-producing.
“Industry” duo Mickey Down and Konrad Kay have reportedly penned a pilot for the series with “Sex Education” director Ben Taylor also a co-creator. Taylor will direct the series and executive produce.
Previously the project was rumored to be at HBO, but it’s not clear where the show will end up at this time as talks are continuing for now.
The series launched in 1961 and ran for six seasons on ITV in the UK and later ABC in the U.S. – one of the first British shows to be acquired for primetime by an American network.
Blending escapist espionage and sci-fi tropes, Patrick Macnee starred as the bowler hat-wearing debonair, gentlemanly secret agent John Steed who fought off diabolical and often surreal plots against the state.
He was aided by a succession of high-kicking female assistants over the years including Honor Blackman, Joanna Lumley, and most famously Diana Rigg as Emma Peel.
Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman starred in a 1998 film adaptation which became a notorious flop for the studio.
