“Shazam,” “Annabelle: Creation” and “Lights Out” helmer David F. Sandberg has signed a deal to direct a film adaptation of the PlayStation horror video game “Until Dawn” at Sony’s Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions.
Blair Butler (“The Invitation”) wrote the script with “The Nun” writer/producer Gary Dauberman doing the most recent draft as well as producing alongside Lotta Losten, Roy Lee, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.
Originally released in 2015, the story is set at an isolated mountain lodge. Eight friends try to stay alive with a mysterious killer on the loose as a mystery surrounding a long-ago mining cave-in features in the story.
Famed horror writer/directors Larry Fessenden and Graham Reznick penned the game which was built on player choice and branching story lines, so no two stories will be the same and every decision shapes the story – determining if characters lived or died, and whom is truly responsible.
Rami Malek, Hayden Panettiere, Peter Stormare and Brett Dalton lent their voices and likenesses to the game which was a hit with critics and received numerous gaming awards nominations. It kicked off a wave of copycats including the similar but notably lesser “The Dark Pictures” anthology franchise of titles, and more recently “The Quarry”.
The film is said to be an “R-rated love letter to the horror genre, centering on an ensemble cast”.
Dauberman most recently penned and directed the new “Salem’s Lot” adaptation at Warner Bros. Pictures which hasn’t set a new release date. He’s currently developing a live-action take on 1980s animated series Gargoyles for the Disney+ service.
