Filmmaker Chad Stahelski has finally confirmed that after nearly a decade in development, his “Highlander” remake is officially set as his next film with the studio giving the project a green light.
Henry Cavill is attached to star in the reimagining of the 1986 film of the same name about immortals who must battle over the ages.
The film officially scored a go order today as part of a just announced pact between Stahelski and Lionsgate that will give him creative oversight over both the “John Wick” and “Highlander” franchises.
Stahelski will shepherd both franchises across film and TV, expanding the creative relationship already in place for “John Wick” and adding the “Highlander” franchise to that stable. He says in a statement:
“I am pleased to be able to grow my relationship with Lionsgate in this new oversight role for the John Wick universe and its further expansion. John Wick is so close to my heart and to be able to continue shepherding it will be a blast for me. I’m so happy to also be launching another franchise with Highlander, a world that is so rich with engaging stories to be told.”
The Len Wiseman-directed “John Wick” spinoff film “The Ballerina” opens on June 7th and early discussions have mentioned a potential fifth “John Wick” film.
Sadly the news means Stahelski’s proposed “Ghost of Tsushima” movie adaptation at Sony Pictures is likely on the back burner.
