Following very good early critical reviews, Disney+ has opted to launch its TV series adaptation of Rick Riordan’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” novels a few hours early – the first two episodes are now available on the service.
With 34 reviews counted, the series is pulling in a 97% (7.9/10) on Rotten Tomatoes where only one of the reviews is a negative. Same with Metacritic where it sits at a 74/100. Both are far above the widely panned prior film adaptations starring Logan Lerman in the title role.
Walker Scobell takes over the Percy role for this new take and Lerman recently surprised Scobell and the rest of the new cast by sending over his blessing during a live recording of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, saying in his message:
“The show looks amazing. I can’t wait to see you all crush it in your roles. You’re making a lot of people happy bringing these characters to life. I can’t imagine a better fit for Percy Jackson than Walker. You were so brilliant in ‘The Adam Project.’ I hope you like eating blue food for the next few years. I think you have a hit show on your hands.”
The prior film adaptations did decent box-office but suffered from major behind-the-scenes drama with Riordan very vocal in his displeasure with them.
As for whether this show will get a second season, executive producer Jon Steinberg suggests to Deadline that there has already been ‘discussions’ about it moving forward:
“I think everyone has a real hope that this will live a long and healthy life. Right now, we’re trying to deal with step one. But we’d be lying if we said there weren’t people who are thinking about step two right now.”
“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” will run for eight episodes in total with new ones weekly through until the end of January.
